Today Simone is feeling a little better. She is still a little sniffly but she was making lots of noise in her crib this morning and I could hear her amusing herself as she jumps up and down on her mattress. I didn’t attempt to go out to Whole Foods yesterday because of the irritability factor with her…but more importantly because one of the crowns in my mouth broke! I have three loose crowns (which can fall out really easily) and I have to have them resealed. One of them broke at the base and it had me hysterically crying yesterday. Hideous is an understatement when it comes to how I look right now. But to little Miss Simone, it didn’t even phase her.

I’m trying to get the nerve to actually go out this morning to Whole Foods. I’ll just try not to smile, but how do you accomplish that feat when you have such a cutie pie looking up at you with those adoring eyes, smiling and jabbering away about what she sees?

I usually get a few staples that she really enjoys…actually I catch my kids stealing one or two bites away from her if I’m not looking! Sometimes I have to guard her food with my life because for some reason my son and daughter feel like “she gets all the good stuff!” Ha! Back a few years ago we wanted to start purchasing rice pasta as a way to just get away from gluten type foods in an attempt to eat more healthy, so I went and bought rice pasta and told the kids that we were going to try this kind for a while. It was a HUGE protest in my house. The kids gave looks of disgust and disapproval, poked at my divine creations and felt like we were trying to punish them! What was the mistake I made? Announcing that it was rice pasta instead of their regular kind! So we dropped the rice pasta back then and it was only recently when Simmi started eating regularly that I started buying it again. They KNEW it was rice pasta…yet, for some odd reason kids just want what they can’t have. That was Simmi’s food, not theirs, and they began to want it. Maybe it was a little devilish on my part to tell them they couldn’t have any, but that seemed to do the trick in getting them to try it with an open mind. Displaying a weird looking face of curiosity they said, “What does that taste like? Can I taste it?” Then I would give them a taste and their eyes would light up and they were hooked. What changed? The only thing that changed was their openness to actually try it without coercion.

I would like to switch the family to rice pasta. I think in the next few months that may be possible and it will be one less thing I worry about at the dinner table. Here is a little boring video of Simone eating her chex. It was filmed a few weeks ago:

  1. What do you need to help fix your teeth?

I am glad Simmi is better! I run into the food issues with my Person. He sometimes gets jealous because we have to buy special food, it’s just human nature. Have you tried making your own rice pasta? I have a pasta making set, but haven’t used it yet. We lack counter space. Perhaps we could split the cost of ingredients and make a party of it sometime.

  2. Hi Kat,
I’m sorry I hadn’t gotten back in touch with you about us getting together! It’s been crazy around here.
I used to have a pasta maker a long time ago when my youngest daughter Shoshie had candida as a baby. I used to make so challah every Friday afternoon, and I guess the build-up of yeast in the house just affected her so negatively. We cleaned everything from top to bottom to try and get the yeast out and then opted for whole grain homemade pastas. I thought they came out really good, but my kids hated it.
I’m sure we could try making together sometime. Do you have any good recipes for making rice pasta? I think that would be fun.
I’ll get back to you in a few days about a good time for us to get together. The extent of my travels today was to Walmart to pick up some new light fixtures and lamps. LOL It was kind of a test run for me to see how Simmi would be. I’m glad I didn’t go all the way to ABQ because five minutes in Walmart and she just started getting really upset. She’s feeling better but she isn’t 100%. We’ll try again tomorrow to get over to Whole Foods.

  3. No problem, I wasn’t feeling well myself. I do have recipes, but I haven’t tried them yet. All of them are gluten free, though I have to avoid even some of the gluten free grains. I figure a pasta making party will at least be fun, though we’d need a cat free kitchen for you.

We can try to meet up again soon.
