Oh happy day! Simmi can eat chicken. After being approved for Medicaid, we immediately went and got her Epipen. I am always cautious when it comes to trying new foods and I usually have the bottle of Benadryl close just in case she does have a reaction. Without her Epipen though, I am not willing to have her try something like chicken or beef. She has never been tested for either of those foods, but if I were to attempt to give it to her without an Epipen present and she were to have a severe reaction, the hospital is about 20 minutes away and God only knows what could happen in that situation. In theory, it is always possible for a person who is allergic to eggs or milk protein to also be allergic to chicken or beef. Because she is extremely allergic to both of eggs and milk, I didn’t want to take that chance without having the Epipen available.
Anyway, I decided to test the waters a little, feeling brave and of course having a plan of action if something did happen. I’m happy to report that she did not have any reaction to eating it. I kept her up for a good three hours after she ate it to watch for any delayed reactions also. She was fine…no, she was better than fine! I was so relieved to know that we can now add this food to her diet and that it brings us one step closer to weaning her from the bottle. This morning her skin was still clear so I know she also doesn’t have a sensitivity to it.
Simmi is also getting really good at drinking from a sippy cup. She really enjoys it. I want her skills to grow for drinking from a regular cup, so I put two cups out; her sippy and her regular cup. She now has a regular routine that she does. This routine involves shaking her sippy into the regular cup and then she attempts to
drink from the cup. Although it spills out everywhere, she is getting better at it every day.
