I’m going to keep this page as an ongoing journal for transitioning Simmi to the GAPS Diet and also to keep a log of changes in her speech and health.
Late November 2011 we start to transition Simmi over to the GAPS Diet
December 10th she says “Mama, can you help me with this?” Her first truly engaged sentence. Later that night for the first time she sang the full alphabet and got about 50% of it correct. Amazing! She no longer eats rice, her special cookies, potato chips, sweet potato chips, and corn chips.
December 11th she says “Hi Vicki, so nice to see you!” (Vicki had been away for the weekend). Simone asks for the first time if she can have an orange, then proceeded to have two! At bedtime she asked to sing the alphabet again and this time got a few more letters correct.
December 12th Simone in response to seeing Poppie walk in the door with a new shiny balloon says, “Poppie, you got the balloon. Balloon! Look a balloon. Poppie thank you for the balloon! Thank you Poppie! I want to get off! (out)” She was buckled into her car seat watching a movie.
Today Simmi drank 1/2 quart of chicken bone broth, chicken and celery. As I write this she is in her room resting for nap time. Here is the video of her seeing the balloon:
December 14th- We go outside to collect duck eggs and Simone wants to count them.
December 16th- Much more calm. Drank chicken broth, ate chicken, raw carrots and celery. Simone initiates the ABC’s and sang it 75% correct. She also has been trying to count more.
December 17th- Simone asks to work on wooden puzzles and she stays focused on the tasks at hand. She participated in putting each puzzle piece in the correct spot as well as repeating all the letters of the alphabet. We then started singing the ABC’s and she got 80% of the letters correct. She went on to put other puzzles together properly without losing focus. She wasn’t distracted nor did she leave the task to do something else. This is a major milestone for us, as she does not attend well to anything other than a television show of her choosing. She is also much more affectionate, wanting to sit in my lap as I read her a story. The hugs and kisses are flowing out of Simmi filled with love. For anyone that struggles to have their toddler enjoy being hugged or touched, this is another major accomplishment. Simone has been actually asking for bananas over the last few days so Dom got her some. She ate three bananas, a few slices of orange, half a pear, grapes, chicken and beef. She did have some bone broth but not as much as I’d like her to have. There’s always tomorrow!
December 18th- Simone sang her ABC’s getting each letter 100% correct. She’s paying attention more to how to pronounce things and asking questions like “what’s this?” while she points to something. This is new for her. She is now becoming independent and asking to put her own clothes on. She can dress herself. Even though she may put the clothing on backwards, we celebrate that she dress herself. She can put a shirt on, pants, and socks and shoes. She now prefers to do these things herself and does not want or need my help. She can also put a button through a large button hole.
Today she ate three bananas, celery, carrots, chopped meat and raisins.
December 20th- While Simone is looking for the remote control for the TV she comes to me and says, “Mom, I can’t find the clicker-its highess (hiding)”
December 22nd- Simone says to me (first time ever), “Mom, lets play school! Come and count with me.” Of course I dropped everything in that second amazed that she asked and in a daze at how she wanted to participate and together we counted all the crayons she had in her box. She was able to stay focused on counting all the way to 43. Before her going on GAPS we wouldn’t be able to get to number 5 without her looking away and doing other things instead. In a separate account, after she put her shirt and pants on, I asked her if she’d like to wear a dress. Her response? “Well, yes of course Mama. I want to wear a dress.” She said it so matter of fact. Last night her Uncle Glen came in to see us for Christmas. He’s here from Texas and for the first time Simone did not just approach him. She showed restraint, a little shyness, and wouldn’t hug him. This is amazing to me because she usually will jabber on with gibberish to ANYONE. Strangers, people she’s only seen once and she’ll try to hold their hand or just walk off with them. Its a very scary thing to watch. Its inappropriate for her to show such affection towards those she doesn’t know. The 22nd marks the first time ever that she shows restraint. She was giggly, excited to show off but would show hesitation when it came to physical contact. Amazing.
